Orris Root
Orris is one of the most precious ingredients in perfumery and is the root of the iris flower “Iris Pallida,” almost exclusively cultivated for perfumery in Tuscany, Italy. The rhizome (root) is harvested and stored in warm cellars. The longer it dries, the more “irone” forms, a natural isolate. This maturation takes about 3 to 5 years and 500 kg of iris roots produce only 1 kg of concrete, also referred to as “orris root butter” or “butter of iris,” making it a highly prized substance. Its scent has a floral violet tone and a warm, creamy, earthy quality with a powdery, woody and leathery texture. For an incredibly elegant orris, consider Ashen Orris.
